Things to Do

Walking, Hiking and Mountaineering

We are located along the fourth stage of the Wicklow Way approximately a 12 mile hike from Glenmalure. For all those mountaineering fans the mountain peak of Lughnaquilla can be seen from the hostel and the base is only a short hike from the hostel. There are many scenic forest walks around the hostel such as Tomnafinnogue Wood walk and The Tinahely Railway Trail for all those who love flora and fauna. As the forests surrounding our hostel are full of deer you may be lucky to stumble across one or two on your walk.

Cycling

There are fantastic roads along the Wicklow Way suitable for adventure cyclists, mountain bikers and those looking for a challenge. There are easier trails for those who enjoy a more leisurely cycle. Our hostel will be a perfect end to a hard day's cycling. We provide bike hire, storage and packed lunches to make your stay more enjoyable.

Angling

Wicklow is the perfect place to Fish. Anglers from all around the country enjoy our nearby rivers, lakes and reservoirs all of which are in easy reach of our hostel. Fly fishing is the most popular. The river Slaney in neighbouring Carlow is known for its excellent salmon catches and a number of east-flowing rivers in Wicklow yield brown and sea-trout catches. Aughrim has a rainbow trout lake which supplies its own rods and bait and rivers like the Avonmore and Derry Rivers stock trout. After your catch you can cook your dinner on our BBQ or use our kitchen! Check out our tie your own flies video link!

Golf

If it's golfing you're looking for then you've come to the right place. Glenmalure, Maccreddin, Woodenbridge and Coolattin Golf Courses are easily accessible from the hostel. Wicklow itself has over 25 fantastic golf courses.

Country Markets

Farmers markets are held every Saturday in the nearby towns of Tinahely and Aughrim displaying stalls of fresh organic vegetables, paintings, sculptures and local wares. On the first Sunday of every month the nearby Maccreddin Village has an open air international market which is not to be missed.

Tinahely Country Fair

This is one of the largest agricultural markets in Ireland attracting ten thousand people each year (August Bank Holiday Monday). This really is an event not to be missed. You will really get a feel for the Irish culture should you choose to attend. The fair displays top range bloodstock, has competitions for dogs, cats and birds and is filled with entertainment, games, song and dance to cater for all. Ploughing and driving events and mounted games are run throughout the day and all events are suitable for families. Accommodation is limited at this time of year so be sure to book your place early to avoid disappointment. Transport is offered to and from the fair for a small charge or you can enjoy the lovely walk.

Aughrim Festival

Held annually at the end of July early August. Aughrim is an idyllic beautiful award winning little town with so much to offer. Table quizzes, music, angling competitions, field day with family orientated events, crowning of festival queen, there is even a glamorous granny competition.! For ceol agus craic (music & fun) you won't be disappointed.

Arklow Seebreeze Festival

Held annually in the third weekend of July, this a slightly unorthodox festival with festivities such as burger eating competitions, spaghetti eating competitions, wheelbarrow obstacle races, pig derby, Irish dancing, fire eating and tractor pulling competitions. The music sessions are not to be missed. Our hostel is a short car journey (15 mins) outside Arklow and there are plenty of discounted taxies available. Check out our notice board on our blog for all upcoming events in the area.
