Heritage

The Old Schoolhouse is a restored Georgian Schoolhouse built in 1828 by the Earl of Coolattin. The school is a protected structure and serviced the local community up to 30 years ago until it fell into disrepair. We have lovingly restored the school to its original state using traditional building techniques and have been commended by the State as being an example of "best practice" in the use of traditional conservation and restoration methods. The result of our labour of love is that we have successfully blended old architecture with new and have a state of the art extension to the rear of the property which houses our dormitories.

If you have a love for Irish history and folklore you won't be disappointed. We have two dolmens nearby, a fairy ring on our doorstep and if you're lucky you may see a Sheela na Gig. We are surrounded by hideouts used by De Valera and Michael Dwyer during the civil unrest, Holts Way is just down the road and the Lacey Brothers were killed returning from the Battle of Vinegar Hill at the bottom of our road in 1798. Fiach McHugh O'Byrne, the famous Wicklow Chieftan had his castle in Ballinacor. There is even a thatched village within 4 kilometres of the hostel.
